The BedWatch team attended the annual American Organization of Nurse Executives conference in Phoenix, Arizona, last week, along with thousands of nursing leaders and healthcare industry vendors.

The educational conference focused on empowering nursing leadership to help shape the future of healthcare in the U.S. and abroad, highlighting the pivotal role nurse leaders play in the delivery of patient care.

Features speakers included Simon Sinek, renowned TED Talk speaker and author of Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, and his newest book, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t; and Mary Beth Bigley, who was recently appointed acting deputy secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).

But perhaps the most motivational speech came from closing speaker Bonnie St. John, an amputee since the age of five and the first African American to win Olympic or Paralympic medals in ski racing. St. John is the author of six books, and co-author of her most recent best-seller, How Great Women Lead, with her daughter.

St. John encouraged attendees to strive for greatness, encouraging them to aim higher — “normal is overrated,” according to St. John.

“As nurse leaders, we must do what it takes and go where we must to have our voices heard.”
