FAQ

What does BedWatch do?

  • BedWatch streamlines the patient throughput process in hospitals, and currently offers two modules: Bed Control (bed management and patient placement tool) and Transport Control (transportation management tool); Admission Control (incorporates patient admissions from sources other than the ED) is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2013).
  • BedWatch provides staff with a mobile, interactive view of supply and demand across the hospital, including occupied beds, transfers, discharges and clean bed supply in real time.
  • BedWatch expedites patients’ transitions from admission to the right room without the time-consuming manual work — phone calls, pages, and impromptu floor meetings — usually required to place patients in busy hospitals.
  • BedWatch makes it easier for hospitals to coordinate operationally across departments, and dramatically improves patient throughput processes.

What hospital departments can benefit from using BedWatch?

  • Emergency Department: BedWatch helps reduce bottlenecks in the ED by providing staff with an accurate view of all available beds in the facility, allowing them to move patients out of the ED and into the right bed, faster.
  • Patient Placement Department: BedWatch provides patient placement staff with a real-time view of the status of every bed in the facility, including pending discharges, allowing them to better manage their resources and place patients in the right bed, the first time. The system can also provide automatic notifications of clean beds, as they occur.
  • Environmental Services Department: BedWatch allows hospital staff to automatically notify the appropriate housekeeper(s) when a patient is discharged, and can be programmed to provide automatic escalation notifications if response time lags. It can also be programmed to notify a secondary ‘STAT’ group of housekeepers if additional support is needed.

How can BedWatch help reduce wait times and alleviate patient flow bottlenecks?

BedWatch provides staff across multiple departments with a real-time view of the status of every bed and unit, eliminating the need for extensive phone calls or “bed huddles” to find available and appropriate beds. BedWatch allows hospital staff to better plan for incoming patients and ensure that patients are placed in the right bed, the first time.

What does BedWatch offer over throughput “bolt ons” from ADT systems?

Most throughput “bolt ons” for ADT systems are not focused on streamlining communication, and don’t offer mobile management. Often, users must update the systems manually from a specific desktop computer, and are not able to manage operations on-the-go. They also tend to be cost-prohibitive, especially for smaller hospitals.

Does BedWatch use Protected Health Information (PHI)?

BedWatch can provide certain PHI via an optional secure HL7 connection to your hospital servers. BedWatch does not require an HL7 connection, or access to PHI, to function properly.

What kind of results can I expect to see after implementing BedWatch?

BedWatch delivers significant results for hospitals, and has been proven to reduce ED hold times, streamline communication throughout the throughput process, increase staff satisfaction, improve the patient experience, and reduce instances of patients “left without physician assessment.’

  • Reduction in patient wait times
  • Reduction in ED hold times
  • Reduction in number of patients ‘Left Without Physician Assessment’
  • Reduction in room turnover times
  • Increase in total number of daily procedures
  • Reduction in average length of stay
  • Improved staff morale
  • Improved patient satisfaction
  • Increased efficiency in transportation process

What kind of reporting and metrics does BedWatch generate?

BedWatch offers a range of pre-programmed reports that can be generated by users at any time. These include:

  • Average Room Turnover Time
  • Discharges by Unit / by Hour / by Day of the Week
  • ADT lag time behind BedWatch system
  • Average Cleaning Time by Housekeeper
  • Transfers by Unit / by Hour / by Day of the Week (Transport Control only)
  • Average Transport Completion Time (Transport Control only)
  • Average Transport Time by Transport Staff Member (Transport Control only)

Is BedWatch compatible with ADT systems?

Yes. BedWatch was designed to “plug in” to any existing hospital ADT system.

Does BedWatch require proprietary hardware and/or devices?

No. BedWatch is a web-based platform that can operate on any Internet-capable device, regardless of the manufacturer.

Is the hospital responsible for purchasing equipment (iPads / iPods)?

Yes, the hospital is responsible for purchasing all hardware, including iPads for key users and iPods for transport staff, and may incorporate these costs into their monthly payments over the term of the contract.

How much does BedWatch® cost?

BedWatch® is a software as a service (saas) product, and operates on a monthly subscription basis. Hospital partners pay only for what they use, making it a more cost-effective option than traditional systems built on the previous generation of technology.
